Man Dies in Police Custody During Crisis Response

A man has died in police custody following a call for service in Fairview Saturday night

A tragic incident occurred in Fairview on Saturday night, where a 25-year-old man died while in police custody following a mental health crisis. The events unfolded shortly before 8:00 p.m., when police officers were called to a residence on Vimy Avenue to assist the individual experiencing the crisis.

Upon arrival, officers reported that the man was in an agitated state. In an effort to manage the situation, law enforcement deployed a taser, subsequently handcuffing the man. Emergency Health Services (EHS) was then summoned to the scene to provide medical support.

As the situation developed, the man's condition began to rapidly decline while he was still in police custody. Officers initiated life-saving efforts in response, and upon the arrival of EHS and Halifax Fire and Emergency personnel, those efforts were continued. Unfortunately, despite the attempts to resuscitate him, the man was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

In the wake of this incident, an autopsy will be conducted by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to ascertain the cause of death. The occurrence has raised significant concern and has led to the case being referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for further investigation.
