LOS ANGELES (AP) - Megan Thee Stallion has successfully obtained a restraining order against imprisoned rapper Tory Lanez, which will remain in effect until early 2030. The order was granted by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard Bloom during a hearing held on Thursday.
Megan, who is a prominent figure in the hip-hop industry, had requested the protective order after alleging that Lanez is continuing to harass her while serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting her in the feet. According to her claims, Lanez is reportedly coordinating harassment efforts through third parties, allegedly using surrogates to communicate with her from prison.
The restraining order was granted after Judge Bloom determined that Megan's legal representation successfully met the burden of proof required for extending a temporary restraining order that was originally obtained in November. This temporary order was put in place after Megan accused Lanez—whose legal name is Daystar Peterson—of orchestrating online attacks on her credibility, including unfounded claims regarding key pieces of evidence in her case, such as missing gun and bullet fragments.
In response to the restraining order request, Lanez's attorney, Michael Hayden, argued that his client's incarceration eliminates any current or future threat to Megan, asserting that there has been no direct contact between the two in recent times. However, the court’s ruling concluded that Megan's safety concerns warranted the continued protective measures.
Lanez was convicted in December 2022 of three felonies, which include assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. His legal team has since filed an appeal, and a motion for a new trial was rejected by the judge.
During Lanez's trial, evidence was presented that included testimony from Megan, who detailed the events of the shooting. She stated that Lanez fired a gun at her feet as she attempted to leave an SUV following a party at Kylie Jenner’s home in the Hollywood Hills, while he allegedly yelled for her to "dance." This incident marked a significant turning point in both Megan's and Lanez's careers. At the time of the shooting, Megan was already an emerging star, eventually winning a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2021 and achieving No. 1 hits like "Savage," featuring Beyoncé, and as a guest on Cardi B's "WAP."
Tory Lanez, who began his music career in 2009 with the release of mixtapes, also enjoyed a rise in popularity, with his last two major label albums reaching the top 10 on the Billboard charts. His conviction and subsequent imprisonment have marked a sharp decline in his career trajectory.
This legal battle highlights the ongoing issues within the music industry regarding accountability and the treatment of women, particularly in the context of violence and harassment. As both artists navigate the aftermath of this high-profile case, the implications will likely resonate within the industry and beyond.
