The incident occurred near the station in the town of Hustopece nad Becvou around noon local time (1100 GMT). Carcinogenic benzol leaked from damaged tank wagons and ignited, leading to the emergency situation. Firefighters are actively working to control the blaze, which has produced thick black smoke visible from considerable distances.

As reports indicate, a total of 15 out of the 17 tanks onboard the freight train were ablaze. Each of these tanks contained approximately 60 metric tons (66 tons) of benzol, a toxic and highly flammable chemical. Firefighters have employed a helicopter in their efforts to manage the fire, while assistance from neighboring Slovakia is en route to help combat the situation. Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that there have been no injuries reported in connection with this incident.

The nearest residential properties to the fire are situated around 500 meters (about a quarter-mile) from the site. Despite the proximity, officials noted that the smoke had not yet reached these homes. In light of the potential health risks posed by the smoke, local authorities have recommended that residents in Hustopece nad Becvou and surrounding towns and villages refrain from opening windows and stay indoors until further notice.

Benzol, the substance involved in this incident, is a derivative containing toxic elements such as benzene, toluene, and xylene, which are common in the production of various chemical substances.
