COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – In a significant development for USA Swimming, the board of governors announced on Friday night that Chrissi Rawak, the athletic director at the University of Delaware, will not take on the role of CEO and president. This decision comes as a surprise due to “unforeseen personal circumstances” that were revealed late in the week.
This decision comes just nine days after USA Swimming had publicly announced Rawak's hiring, which raised expectations for new leadership in the organization. In light of this recent change, Shana Ferguson will continue in her role as interim CEO. USA Swimming expressed their disappointment regarding the turn of events but emphasized their confidence in the organization, its leadership team, and the overall strategic direction moving forward.
Chrissi Rawak was set to succeed Tim Hinchey, who departed from his position last year shortly after the conclusion of the Paris Games. Rawak’s appointment was viewed as a promising step for USA Swimming, particularly given her accomplishments as an athletic director, which earned her the title of Athletic Director of the Year in 2024 from a national group of peers. Her leadership had also led to a substantial $38 million fundraising campaign aimed at constructing a new athletic department facility.
Prior to her tenure at Delaware, Rawak held an executive position within the Michigan athletic department. Her extensive background includes time as a swimmer on the Michigan swimming and diving team, where she later contributed as an assistant coach from 1992 to 1997. Rawak's unique blend of experience as both a competitor and administrator was anticipated to bring valuable insights to USA Swimming.
Despite the unexpected withdrawal of Rawak from the CEO position, USA Swimming remains committed to its goals and mission. The organization has been facing a transitional period since the departure of Tim Hinchey and is actively seeking stability as it prepares for future competitions, including the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
As the situation unfolds, USA Swimming will continue to rely on the leadership of Shana Ferguson as they navigate this change. The board's statement reflects a hopeful outlook for the future, underscoring their trust in the current leadership and strategic plans that guide the federation.
