"Canadian and U.S. Authors Shine in Carol Shields Prize"

Canisia Lubrin’s “Code Noir” and Anne Fleming’s “Curiosities” are among the 15 books longlisted for the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction

Canisia Lubrin's novel "Code Noir" and Anne Fleming's "Curiosities" are notable contenders on the longlist for the prestigious Carol Shields Prize for Fiction. This prize, which offers a substantial award of US$150,000, stands as the largest literary accolade specifically aimed at women and non-binary authors. Both American and Canadian writers are eligible for this award, highlighting its cross-cultural significance in the literary community.

The longlist comprises 15 books, showcasing a diverse array of talent within the literary sphere. In addition to Lubrin and Fleming, who both gained recognition with shortlist placements for major literary awards in the previous fall, other noteworthy Canadian authors are included. Dominique Fortier's "Pale Shadows," which has been translated by Rhonda Mullins, and Oonya Kempadoo's "Naniki" represent further Canadian contributions to the longlist.

Completing the Canadian lineup is "Cicada Summer" by Erica McKeen, rounding out a robust collection of works from north of the border. The American side of the longlist features a strong representation as well, including Miranda July's "All Fours," Rachel Kushner's "Creation Lake," and Mubanga Kalimamukwento's "Obligations to the Wounded." This broad spectrum of authors underscores the rich storytelling traditions of both nations.

As the anticipation builds, the shortlist will be unveiled on April 3, leading up to the award ceremony scheduled for May 1. Alongside the prominent winner, each of the four runners-up will be rewarded with US$12,500, ensuring that multiple voices are acknowledged and celebrated in this competitive literary landscape.

This initiative not only appreciates literary excellence but also emphasizes the importance of diverse narratives and representations within literature. As the Carol Shields Prize continues to grow in stature and prestige, it fosters an environment where female and non-binary authors can thrive and share their unique stories with a wider audience.
