"Space Ghost Voice Actor George Lowe Passes Away at 67"

George Lowe, the voice behind the irreverent animated superhero on Adult Swim’s “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” has died

George Lowe, the beloved voice actor widely recognized for his role as the irreverent animated superhero in Adult Swim's "Space Ghost Coast to Coast," has passed away at the age of 67. His death occurred on Sunday in Lakeland, Florida, as confirmed by two of his business representatives. Lowe had been undergoing a challenging recovery from elective heart surgery performed in November. A statement from his family emphasized that over the past few months, his loved ones had been by his side, providing support and care during this difficult time.

Lowe's distinct booming voice and unique brand of humor helped transform "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" into a cult classic cherished by young adults and teenagers. The show made its debut in 1994 and aired for over a decade on Cartoon Network as part of its Adult Swim nighttime programming block. Notably, it was one of Cartoon Network's first original productions, paving the way for a variety of other popular series, including "The Powerpuff Girls," "Courage the Cowardly Dog," and "Johnny Bravo."

In "Space Ghost Coast to Coast," Lowe voiced the character of Space Ghost, a cartoon superhero who hosted a talk show that featured interviews with real celebrities. Although the interviews with stars like William Shatner, Conan O'Brien, and Donny Osmond were pre-recorded, Lowe infused the show with his trademark wacky and rambling humor, often diverging into absurd questions, such as asking guests if they were getting enough oxygen. In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2004, he remarked, "Insanity became en vogue, thanks to us."

Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen paid tribute to Lowe, expressing how the show showcased the network's potential for success with original content. He remarked, "You all knew him as Space Ghost (and all his other characters), but we knew him as himself, a true character in his own right, one that left an indelible mark on all of us at Adult Swim." According to Ouweleen, the show's producers often began recording Lowe as soon as he entered the recording booth, capturing some of the best material when he was unaware he was being recorded.

In addition to his iconic role on "Space Ghost Coast to Coast," Lowe lent his voice to various characters in other Adult Swim shows, including "Robot Chicken," "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," and "The Brak Show." Up until the past year, he continued to make regular appearances at comic book and sci-fi conventions, maintaining his connection with fans.

Born in Dunedin, Florida, Lowe began his career as a disc jockey and television personality in Florida and Georgia. Even after the success of Adult Swim, he persisted in providing voice work for radio stations. Beyond his voice acting, Lowe was an avid collector of folk and pop art and was a self-taught artist. His intricate pen and ink drawings earned recognition and were showcased in several museums, including The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, where his work is part of its permanent collection.

At this time, there are no specific details available regarding Lowe's survivors. The family has announced that there will be a private service to honor his memory.
