On Saturday, the Halifax Mooseheads faced off against Nate Tivey and the Saint John Sea Dogs in their weekend home-and-home series at the Scotiabank Centre. The Mooseheads were still in search of their first victory of the new year as the game commenced.
The first period was an action-packed exchange, concluding with both teams tied at two goals apiece. Shawn Carrier took the initiative for the Mooseheads, scoring just three and a half minutes into the game with a powerful shot that found the back of the Sea Dogs' net. In response, Saint John equalized through Olivier Groulx, who redirected a shot past Halifax goalie Jacob Steinman while the Sea Dogs were on a power play. The Mooseheads managed to regain the lead shortly after, with Braedon MacPhee capitalizing on a rebound to tuck the puck into an open net. However, the period ended in a deadlock as Groulx struck again, netting his first goal of the match to make it 2-2.
The second period saw a shift in momentum, predominantly favoring the Sea Dogs. Olivier Groulx emerged as the star of the night by completing his hat trick just before the end of the frame, scoring the sole goal of the period and giving Saint John a 3-2 advantage going into the final interval.
In the third period, the Mooseheads sought to come back and retied the game at 3-3. Owen Philips, returning from an injury sustained on December 30th against the Cape Breton Eagles, scored his first goal back at 6:09. He executed a well-placed shot that went past Saint John goalie Gravel over the blocker, bringing the Mooseheads even again.
The remainder of the third period remained scoreless, forcing the game into overtime. In the extra session, the tension mounted as both teams battled for the decisive goal. The Sea Dogs finally broke the stalemate when Tyler Peddle scored on a power play, hammering a shot past Steinman. This goal allowed Saint John to end their five-game losing streak.
Despite the loss, the Mooseheads managed to earn a point, bringing their record to 11-21-6. Meanwhile, the Sea Dogs improved to 17-21-0 following this victory.
Looking ahead, the Mooseheads are set to hit the ice again on Sunday, January 12th, when they travel to Saint John to complete the weekend’s home-and-home series. The puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m., and fans can follow the action live on 95.7 NewsRadio.
