MOUNT COBB, Pa. (AP) — A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening when a charter bus carrying members of the Greater Scranton Black Diamonds Pipe Band collided with a tractor-trailer in northeastern Pennsylvania. The bus was returning from a St. Patrick's Day parade in Milford when the accident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. while exiting westbound on Interstate 84.
The tractor-trailer involved in the crash was unoccupied at the time of the accident. Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Shaffer provided these details, asserting that the crash was not weather-related. Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson Trooper First Class Robert Urban reported that the incident is currently under investigation.
Seventeen individuals aboard the bus sustained minor injuries due to the collision. Fortunately, none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, and all affected are expected to make a full recovery. Bill Hetherson, the business manager for the Greater Scranton Black Diamonds Pipe Band, expressed relief over the relatively minor injuries and confirmed that the band members received medical attention. Following the accident, the band made the decision to cancel their scheduled group St. Patrick's Day events for the following Monday. However, some members may still perform solo.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with traveling, even during celebratory events such as St. Patrick's Day parades. As the investigation continues, officials and community members alike are hopeful for the swift recovery of those injured and are reflecting on the importance of safety on the roads.
