"6.2 Magnitude Quake Hits Southwestern Mexico"

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A magnitude 6

MEXICO CITY (AP) – A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck a region in southwestern Mexico early on a Sunday morning, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. Fortunately, the quake did not result in any serious damage or casualties.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 21 kilometers (13 miles) southeast of Aquila, positioned close to the boundary between Colima and Michoacán states. The tremor originated at a depth of 34 kilometers (21 miles).

In response to the quake, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum took to social media platform X to inform the public that emergency response teams would be reviewing their protocols. She stated, “There are no new developments.” The Mexican Social Security Institute corroborated this by stating that there were no reports of damage in Mexico City, which is approximately 600 kilometers (372 miles) to the east of the quake's epicenter, near the mountainous village of Coalcomán, Michoacán.

Social media activity revealed that individuals in Coalcomán, as well as Uruapan, the second largest city in Michoacán, documented their experiences. Surveillance footage timestamped at 2:32 a.m. local time showed buildings swaying and parked vehicles shaking. Many residents reported fleeing to the streets to wait for the tremors to cease.

As of 9 a.m. local time on the Sunday following the quake, Mexico's national seismological service indicated that there had been 329 aftershocks. They estimated the magnitude of these aftershocks at 6.1, noting that it is common for preliminary measurements to vary in magnitude.

Mexico is historically vulnerable to seismic activity due to its geographical positioning near the collision of tectonic plates. Over the past 40 years, the country has experienced no less than seven earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater, which have collectively resulted in approximately 10,000 fatalities. A significant portion of these deaths was attributed to a catastrophic 8.0 earthquake that occurred in 1985.
