NEW YORK (AP) – In a significant safety move, Segway is recalling approximately 220,000 of its scooters sold across the United States. This action has been prompted by reports of fall hazards that have resulted in various user injuries, ranging from minor bruises to serious broken bones.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a notice highlighting that the folding mechanism of Segway's Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters may fail during operation. This failure can cause the handlebars or stem of the scooters to fold unexpectedly, posing a serious risk to riders. The recall notice, published on a Thursday, mentioned that Segway had received 68 reports of such folding mechanism failures, leading to 20 reported injuries that included abrasions, bruises, lacerations, and broken bones.

Consumers who own these recalled scooters are strongly advised to cease using them immediately. They are encouraged to contact Segway to request a free maintenance kit. This maintenance kit is designed to help users inspect and adjust the scooters' locking mechanisms as needed and comes with a set of tools and step-by-step instructions provided by Segway.

In a statement posted on their website, Segway emphasized the importance of regular checks on the folding mechanism, stating, “Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening.” Notably, the company has indicated that this recall will not involve returns or replacements for the scooters.

The scooters affected by this recall were manufactured in China and Malaysia. They were sold through various retailers across the U.S., including major stores such as Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club, as well as online platforms like Segway.com and Amazon.com. The sale period for these products spans from January 2020 to February 2025, with prices varying between $600 to $1,000.

As the recall unfolds, safety concerns surrounding the Segway scooters underscore the importance of consumer awareness and vigilance in monitoring the functionality of rideable appliances. Given the potential for serious injuries, timely action is critical for those who possess the affected models.
