The union representing firefighters in the Halifax area is raising concerns about the dangers associated with "derelict" buildings, especially following a series of fires that have occurred in recent weeks. The Halifax Professional Fire Fighters union has highlighted the significant hazards posed by vacant structures, particularly in light of three separate incidents at the abandoned Saint Patrick's Alexandra School located on Maitland Street in the north end of Halifax last week.
Brenden Meagher, the president of the firefighters' union, issued a press release stating, "Our members are trained and ready to respond, but each of these calls introduces serious risks – not only to firefighters but to members of the public who may be inside or near these properties." He emphasized that derelict buildings should not merely be seen as signs of urban decay; instead, they are high-hazard zones that pose a direct threat to safety. The frequency and seriousness of the recent fire incidents at such locations reinforce this urgent issue.
In a statement to CityNews Halifax, municipal spokesperson Laura White revealed that the Saint Patrick's Alexandra School site has been the scene of 12 fire-related incidents over the past year, showcasing a troubling trend that necessitates immediate attention.
White also pointed out the illegal nature of trespassing on these properties, indicating that such actions increase risks for both the public and the firefighters. Another vacant educational institution, the Bloomfield site on Agricola Street, has experienced similar issues, with a notable large-scale fire in February requiring a significant response from firefighting teams.
In light of these events, White shared that a demolition permit has been issued for the Bloomfield site. This property has been under the ownership of Alex Halef of BANC Group since 2021, indicating a potential shift towards addressing the risks posed by such derelict structures.
CityNews has made attempts to contact BANC Group for further comments regarding the situation at both the Saint Patrick’s Alexandra School and Bloomfield sites. However, the urgency of the matter remains clear as firefighters advocate for better safety measures and proactive responses to the rising number of fire incidents in these dangerous vacant buildings.
