Ontario has announced a significant investment of $35 million to support the Shaw Festival in the reconstruction of the Royal George Theatre, a key venue in Niagara-on-the-Lake. According to Tourism Minister Stan Cho, this financial backing aims to facilitate the construction of a larger and more modern theater, as the province seeks to strengthen the local economy in both Niagara-on-the-Lake and its adjacent areas.
The provincial government emphasizes that the redevelopment of the Royal George Theatre will yield substantial economic benefits. The construction process is projected to generate approximately 550 jobs, providing a boost to the region's employment landscape. Additionally, once completed, the new theater is expected to offer 20 percent more seating capacity, along with enhanced rehearsal and workspace facilities for performers and production teams.
As part of the revitalization efforts, the Royal George Theatre is slated for permanent closure later this year. The anticipated completion date for the rebuild is set for 2029, marking a significant upgrade for one of the region's cultural landmarks.
Minister Cho envisions that the improved venue will not only attract more tourists to the Niagara region but also encourage them to extend their stay, thus contributing to the local hospitality and tourism sectors.
