SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) - Bulgaria has received its first of 16 new F-16 military jets from the United States, marking a significant upgrade to its defense capabilities and a step towards aligning its air force with NATO standards. The delivery of the first aircraft took place at the Graf Ignatievo air base, centrally located in Bulgaria, on April 2, 2025.
Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov welcomed the arrival of the jet, emphasizing its importance beyond being just a fighter aircraft. "This is not just a fighter jet, but a symbol and embodiment of Bulgaria’s strategic partnership with the United States, a partnership that offers a new perspective for the Bulgarian Army," he stated.
The contract to purchase the F-16 Block 70 aircraft was signed in July 2019, with Bulgaria committing to a total expenditure of $1.3 billion for eight jets. The initial plans had aimed for the first jets' arrival in 2023; however, the COVID-19 pandemic led to delays in their delivery. In addition to the initial order, the Bulgarian government entered into a contract with American aerospace giant Lockheed Martin for an additional batch of eight F-16 jets, which are expected to be delivered by the end of 2027.
Since joining NATO in 2004, Bulgaria has faced challenges in modernizing its military, particularly its aging air fleet, which primarily consists of Soviet-made MiG-29 jets. Financial difficulties have repeatedly postponed attempts to upgrade the air force. In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, Bulgaria has been relying on assistance from fellow NATO members to meet its air policing obligations.
The delivery of the F-16 jets represents a crucial step for Bulgaria in enhancing its military capabilities in a geopolitical climate marked by increasing tensions in Eastern Europe. It reflects Bulgaria's commitment to strengthening its defense posture and its collaboration with the United States, a key ally within NATO. As the first of the 16 jets is now operational, the Bulgarian government hopes that this advancement will pave the way for further modernization of its military forces.
