"Nova Scotia Launches Supportive Housing for Youth"

The provincial government has announced an agreement with a youth support organization that will create new, supportive housing in Halifax

The provincial government of Nova Scotia has announced a significant partnership with a youth support organization aimed at enhancing housing availability in Halifax. This collaboration involves the Affordable Housing Association and Phoenix Youth Programs, focusing on creating supportive housing for youth and young families.

Colton LeBlanc, the Minister of Growth and Development, emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the housing crisis by stating, “We made a promise to make more housing available to Nova Scotians who need it most, and we are keeping our promise.” He highlighted that this initiative marks the first of its kind in Nova Scotia, offering safe and affordable housing that comes equipped with tailored support systems to help young residents establish strong foundations for their futures.

The initiative will utilize two completely refurbished apartment buildings to provide supportive housing for up to 22 individuals aged between 16 to 24, as well as young families. The housing arrangement consists of 12 units, each with two bedrooms and a shared living space; however, it has been made clear that young individuals with children will not be required to share space with other residents.

Included in the housing plan are utilities such as internet service. Residents are expected to contribute 30 percent of their gross monthly income towards rent, with a maximum cap of $500. This financial model aims to ensure that housing remains affordable while encouraging economic independence among the residents.

Timothy Crooks, the executive director of Phoenix Youth Programs, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “What awaits is dignified, affordable housing for up to 22 youth who were previously in dire housing need.” He elaborated that Phoenix staff will collaborate closely with the youth, providing an array of wraparound services tailored to meet the individual goals of each resident.

The provincial Department of Opportunities and Social Development has allocated $541,000 to cover operational expenses and support services necessary for the initiative to succeed. In addition, the Department of Growth and Development has granted a substantial loan of $3.68 million for the property purchase under the Community Housing Acquisition Program, showcasing the government’s commitment to boosting affordable housing options.

This agreement marks a transformative step in addressing the essential housing needs of vulnerable youth and young families in Halifax, contributing to long-term community stability and growth.
