"Minecraft Movie Soars to Top Box Office of 2025"

NEW YORK (AP) — After just two weeks in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie” is already the highest grossing Hollywood release of 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — After just two weeks in theaters, A Minecraft Movie has already become the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025. The Warner Bros. adaptation of the popular video game managed to exceed expectations, recording a remarkable $80.6 million in ticket sales during its second weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Worldwide, the film has quickly surpassed $550 million in earnings.

Following an impressive $300 million global debut, A Minecraft Movie has continued to attract audiences far beyond initial forecasts. Directed by Jared Hess and featuring performances by Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film experienced a 50% drop in revenue during its second week in U.S. and Canadian theaters, which is considered a strong hold after such a substantial opening weekend.

Despite facing criticism from reviewers, earning only a 46% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and receiving a “B+” CinemaScore from audiences, A Minecraft Movie has resonated with moviegoers. This phenomenon highlights the growing interest in big-budget video game adaptations, an emerging trend in cinema that A Minecraft Movie exemplifies. This $150 million co-production between Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment is credited with helping to rejuvenate theaters, which had suffered from a sluggish start to the year. Overall ticket sales during the weekend more than doubled compared to the same weekend in 2024, with revenues now nearly equal to the previous year, although 2025's grosses still trail 2019's earnings by 31%.

Throughout the weekend, none of the new releases posed a significant challenge to A Minecraft Movie’s dominance, but several films reported better-than-expected results. Among these, The King of Kings, an animated film depicting the life of Jesus aimed at Christian audiences, secured second place with an impressive $19.1 million across 3,200 theaters. The film, which loosely adapts a children’s book by Charles Dickens and features an esteemed voice cast including Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, and Uma Thurman, received a coveted “A+” CinemaScore from viewers, indicating strong audience appeal ahead of the Easter holiday.

Meanwhile, The Amateur, a 20th Century Studios film starring Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer on a revenge mission for his wife's murder, debuted with $15 million domestically, adding another $17.2 million from international markets. Though critics described the film as an awkward vehicle for Malek, who also served as a producer, it managed to attract a respectable audience.

Additionally, A24's Warfare, directed by Alex Garland, made $8.3 million from 2,670 theaters. This film's story, based on a mission conducted by Navy SEALs during the Iraq War, has been praised for its realistic portrayal of combat. Lastly, Blumhouse Productions' thriller, Drop, was released to $7.5 million from 3,085 theaters, featuring a plot centered around a single mother experiencing terror during a first date.

As the final domestic figures are released Monday, box office estimates for Friday to Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters indicated the following:

1. A Minecraft Movie: $80.6 million

2. The King of Kings: $19.1 million

3. The Amateur: $15 million

4. Warfare: $8.3 million

5. Drop: $7.5 million

6. The Chosen: Last Supper (Part 3): $6 million

7. A Working Man: $3.1 million

8. Snow White: $2.8 million

9. The Woman in the Yard: $2.1 million

10. The Chosen: Last Supper (Part 2): $932,106
