Trump Escalates Attacks on "60 Minutes" After Broadcast

President Donald Trump bitterly attacked “60 Minutes” shortly after the CBS newsmagazine broadcast stories on Ukraine and Greenland on Sunday, saying the network was out of control and should “pay a big price” for going after him

President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack against CBS's "60 Minutes" shortly after the network aired segments on Ukraine and Greenland on Sunday. He expressed his discontent on his Truth Social platform, asserting that the program has repeatedly mentioned his name in a derogatory and defamatory context. Trump claimed that the recent broadcast was the worst yet, stating, "Almost every week, 60 Minutes … mentions the name 'TRUMP' in a derogatory and defamatory way, but this Weekend's 'BROADCAST' tops them all." He urged Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr to impose strict penalties and fines on the network for what he characterized as "unlawful and illegal behavior."

The network did not respond immediately to Trump's comments. This outburst comes amid an ongoing $20 billion lawsuit that Trump has filed against "60 Minutes." The lawsuit revolves around the editing of an interview featuring Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, which Trump claims was manipulated to favor her. CBS’s "60 Minutes" has denied this allegation, and recent reports indicate that negotiations for a settlement between Trump's legal team and CBS's parent company are currently underway.

In addition to Trump's lawsuit, Chairman Carr and the FCC have initiated a related investigation into CBS News concerning this matter. CBS is not the only organization under scrutiny; the investigation encompasses other major networks such as ABC News, NBC, PBS, NPR, and the Walt Disney Co.

Despite the ongoing legal struggles, "60 Minutes" has maintained its critical approach to covering Trump’s administration since his second inauguration. Correspondent Scott Pelley, for instance, conducted a significant interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, shortly after a tragic incident where nine children were killed in a Russian attack.

During this interview, which aired on Sunday, Zelenskyy expressed his deep animosity towards Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. He openly invited Trump to visit Ukraine to witness the devastation caused by the conflict.

Additionally, correspondent Jon Wertheim reported from Greenland, discussing local reactions to Trump’s controversial desire to acquire the territory. In his social media post, Trump decried "60 Minutes" as no longer a legitimate news program, referring to it instead as "a dishonest Political Operative simply disguised as 'News.'" He insisted that the network must be held accountable for its actions and their impact.
