Search for Missing Child in Guysborough Suspended

RCMP have suspended a multi-agency search for a child who fell into Cook’s Cove in Guysborough County

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the suspension of a multi-agency search for a child who fell into Cook's Cove, located in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. The incident occurred on April 17 at approximately 1:40 p.m., when the child was engaged in fishing activities alongside a man and another child. According to police reports, the adult attempted to rescue the child but was unfortunately unsuccessful.

In the wake of this tragic event, a significant search operation was launched, involving over 13 different agencies. These included multiple local fire departments, Emergency Health Services (EHS) LifeFlight, and volunteer ground search and rescue teams such as Pictou County GSAR, Strait Area GSAR, Inverness County GSAR, and Colchester GSAR. Additionally, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources Air Services, Nova Scotia Public Safety Field Communications, Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and various RCMP units participated in the extensive search efforts.

Despite the extensive resources deployed in the search, officials stated that there is currently no information to indicate the child managed to escape the water safely. The search, which aimed to recover the child’s remains, was exhaustive but did not yield any clues that would help responders locate where the child might be. As a result, the search operations were officially suspended on April 19 at 5 p.m.

The RCMP confirmed that any future search efforts would likely be resumed from the air at a later date, although specific plans were not detailed. Community members and families affected by this incident await further updates while the authorities continue to process the situation with care and sensitivity.
