Discover Halifax has announced that tourism in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) achieved another record milestone in 2024. With approximately 1,629,000 visitors recorded, this figure represents a 2.6 percent increase compared to the previous record set in 2023.
Ross Jefferson, the President and CEO of Discover Halifax, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the new statistics, stating, “To compare, visitation to our destination had hit an all-time high in 2019, setting a new standard for our industry. The latest numbers for 2024 demonstrate remarkable strides in building the appeal of our destination and welcoming visitors to experience all we have to offer.” This highlights the continuous growth and resilience of Halifax's appeal as a tourist destination, especially as it rebounds from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since 2019, the hospitality sector in HRM has seen significant growth, evidenced by an 11.4 percent increase in hotel room nights sold. This growth surpasses the 8 percent rise in hotel room supply during the same timeframe, indicating a strong demand for accommodations as more travelers choose Halifax for their visits.
In light of this growth, Jefferson indicated that Discover Halifax plans to engage the community further, emphasizing the importance of local input in the development of an updated tourism strategy for HRM. This community engagement process is intended to gather insights and ideas that will help enhance the visitor experience and ensure sustainable growth in the tourism industry.
The increase in tourism is attributed to various factors, including enhanced marketing initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and an expanded array of attractions and events that cater to diverse visitor interests. As Halifax continues to evolve as a travel destination, the focus will not only be on attracting more visitors but also on providing quality experiences that encourage longer stays and repeat visits.
Looking ahead, Discover Halifax is poised to build on this positive momentum, ensuring that the region remains competitive in the tourism sector. Through strategic planning and community collaboration, HRM aims to further solidify its status as a premier destination for tourists from across Canada and around the world.
