"Winter Storm Approaches: Snow Forecast for HRM"

The snow that HRM saw on Thursday night turned into a sloppy mess Friday morning with some rain in the forecast this morning and temperatures above the freezing mark

The snow that was observed in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) on Thursday night transformed into a messy situation by Friday morning, as rain fell and temperatures rose above freezing. This wintery mixture has prompted residents to prepare for more significant weather changes as attention shifts to Sunday.

According to 95-7 weather specialist Allister Aalders, a winter storm is on track to approach the region, specifically passing near Sable Island on Sunday. This upcoming storm is expected to deliver measurable snowfall to HRM, with estimations suggesting accumulations of approximately 5 to over 10 centimeters in Halifax. However, areas along the South Shore and Southwest Nova Scotia may experience even greater snowfall totals, surpassing the 10 cm mark.

Despite the forecasts for snowfall, Aalders emphasized that there remains a degree of uncertainty related to the storm's exact path. If the storm were to shift closer to mainland Nova Scotia, the predicted snowfall amounts could potentially increase. Aalders stated, "Currently looks like a lighter snowfall event, but some breezy northeast to northwesterly winds generally gusting to 30-50 km/h will lead to areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility." This factor could significantly impact travel and outdoor activities in the region during the storm's duration.

As the weekend progresses, it is anticipated that Monday will bring improved weather conditions. Residents can look forward to clearing skies and colder temperatures, with values near minus 7 degrees Celsius, indicating a return to more typical winter conditions after the disruptive weather from the storm.

Overall, as the winter storm approaches HRM, community members should remain vigilant regarding weather updates and prepare for potential challenges that could arise from the forecasted snowfall and high winds. Safe practices are encouraged as the region braces for the incoming winter weather conditions.
