Connecticut U.S. Representative John Larson, 76, experienced a medical incident on the House floor during a speech on Monday that caused him to momentarily stop speaking and exhibit unusual behavior. The incident occurred while he was addressing colleagues, and he suddenly dropped his arm, stared blankly ahead, and appeared to make chewing movements. Following the episode, Larson announced on Tuesday night that he had suffered a complex partial seizure.
Complex partial seizures can last anywhere from 30 seconds to two minutes and often leave the person appearing to daydream or disengaged. According to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, individuals experiencing such seizures may display repetitive movements like chewing or fumbling with their hands. Larson's seizure was subsequently diagnosed after a thorough evaluation and a variety of medical tests, as indicated in a statement released by his office.
Initially, Larson's office speculated that the seizure might have been an adverse reaction to a new medication. However, Larson attributed the seizure to health issues stemming from a heart valve replacement he underwent 15 years ago. He explained that he had a congenital variation in the shape of his aortic valve that necessitated the surgery, and people with similar conditions might develop symptoms such as sudden changes in speech or movement, which was evident in his recent episode.
In a statement, Larson expressed his gratitude to medical professionals and reassured the public that he has been prescribed new medication intended to significantly lower the risk of future seizures. "Doctors tell me it will greatly reduce the chance of this happening again," Larson noted. Despite the incident, he remains committed to his responsibilities and is looking forward to returning to his duties in Congress, where he serves on the House Ways and Means Committee.
Larson emphasized his eagerness to represent the residents of Connecticut’s First District. He stated, "I am looking forward to getting back to work for the people of Connecticut’s First District." Following his recovery and the assurance from his medical team, he plans to resume his regular congressional activities on Wednesday.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential health challenges that can arise while public officials carry out their duties. As Larson continues to manage his health and responsibilities, his commitment to his constituents remains unwavering.
