MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Bradley Robert Dawson, a 40-year-old man from Memphis, Tennessee, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Christe Chen, during their honeymoon in Fiji in 2022. According to a court official, the sentence was announced on Friday, requiring Dawson to serve a minimum of 18 years in prison before he can be eligible for parole.
The tragic incident occurred at the Turtle Island resort situated in the Yasawa archipelago, just two days after the newlyweds arrived in Fiji. Dawson was convicted of murdering his 36-year-old wife in December, and an official from the Fiji High Court registry in Lautoka confirmed the severity of his sentencing on Wednesday. The court found that Dawson had shown a blatant disregard for Chen's right to life and her personal autonomy.
During the sentencing, Justice Riyaz Hamza condemned Dawson's actions following the murder, emphasizing the appalling nature of his conduct. “Your conduct after the incident was appalling," Hamza stated. "Having inflicted serious and life-threatening injuries to the deceased, you fled the scene of the crime, leaving the deceased alone and helpless,” as reported by The Fiji Times newspaper.
On the morning following the incident, resort staff discovered Chen’s body in their accommodation. She had sustained multiple blunt force trauma wounds to her head, which raised alarm as the couple had been heard arguing, and they did not attend breakfast or lunch that day. In the wake of the murder, Dawson attempted to escape by kayak to a nearby island.
Dawson maintained a plea of not guilty throughout the trial, which lasted eight days. His defense attorney, Anil Prasad, argued that the prosecution failed to provide adequate evidence to secure a conviction. Prasad pointed out that many of the couple's personal belongings remained at the resort, suggesting that Dawson did not intend to flee the country. Moreover, he contended that there were no injuries on Dawson that would indicate he had been involved in a physical confrontation with Chen.
Despite these defenses, Justice Hamza stated that he was convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that Dawson was solely responsible for the crime. Throughout the trial, evidence presented firmly established Dawson's culpability in the murder of his wife.
Prior to the incident, Dawson was employed in the information technology department at Youth Villages, a nonprofit organization in Memphis focused on child welfare and support. An online record check indicated no criminal background for Dawson in Shelby County, which encompasses Memphis.
The Turtle Island resort itself is renowned for its exclusivity, situated on a remote 500-acre island that accommodates a limited number of 14 couples at any given time. The Yasawa archipelago comprises approximately 20 volcanic islands located in the western region of Fiji, a nation that has a population of around 930,000 residents.
