Apache Tribe Member Arrested for Arson in Wildfire

PHOENIX (AP) — A member of the San Carlos Apache tribe was arrested Friday for allegedly starting a wildfire that destroyed 21 homes and forced hundreds of people on the southeastern Arizona reservation to evacuate, federal prosecutors said

PHOENIX (AP) – A member of the San Carlos Apache tribe, identified as Keanu Rudy Dude, was arrested on Friday, facing charges of arson linked to a significant wildfire that occurred in July 2024. This fire had devastating effects, destroying 21 homes and prompting mandatory evacuations for hundreds of residents on the southeastern Arizona reservation, as stated by federal prosecutors.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona revealed that the wildfire, known as the Watch Fire, scorched over 3 square miles (approximately 7.8 square kilometers) of land. The arrest of Dude, age 25, was conducted based on an outstanding indictment from a federal grand jury in Phoenix. As of the time of the report, Dude's lawyer had not provided any comments to the media regarding the arrest.

The Watch Fire not only caused extensive damage to property but also impacted local infrastructure by damaging power lines, which led to temporary power outages in the area. Local authorities reported that it took a week to fully contain the fire, and during this period, a state of emergency was declared to assist affected members of the San Carlos Apache tribe.

Despite the extensive damage, no injuries were reported in relation to the wildfire. Tribal chairman Terry Rambler characterized the event as the “most serious structural fire” on the reservation in several decades, highlighting the severity of the incident and its impact on the community. He indicated that the fire had left a lasting mark on the local landscape and the lives of its residents.

In legal proceedings, Keanu Rudy Dude is scheduled for his initial court appearance on February 24. Tribal officials noted that Dude possesses a criminal record, although no further details regarding his prior offenses or a possible motive for starting the fire have been disclosed at this time.

The incident raises broader concerns regarding wildfire safety and community preparedness, particularly in areas with vulnerable populations. As investigations continue, further information about the motives behind the fire and additional legal ramifications for Dude may emerge in the coming weeks.
